Feb 16, Immigrants are proud Canadians

A recent Environics survey suggests that most Canadians feel that immigrants are just as likely to be good citizens as people who were born here.

The willingness of Canadians to not view a person's foreign background as an impediment to citizenship is a product of the country's multicultural policies and the visible effect of immigrants on the economy, said Usha George, dean of Ryerson University's Faculty of Community Services.

Integration of immigrants has worked in Canada because the government has funded programs that teach immigrants about Canadian values and society has adapted its institutions to accommodate diversity.

Whatever Canada is doing, it seems to be positively influencing immigrants' views of the country, the survey suggests: 88 per cent of respondents who were born outside Canada said they were very proud to be Canadian, compared with 81 per cent of those born here.

Yay for Abbotsford!! I recently arrived here, and I love this city! Beautiful mountains all around (although they're not always visible when it's cloudy or raining, and that happens quite often), not too crowded, nice little shopping areas (although I miss certain stores, but a huge mall is coming this fall), everything is close by, and winter sucks only because it rains a lot, but the temperatures are amazing compared to Saskatoon's harsh winters... and news like this is just icing on the cake! :)

A new survey on immigration shows that the two groups surveyed - native-born Canadians and newcomers - are in agreement that immigrants should find ways to integrate, such as adopting "Canadian values" of gender equality and tolerance for others and learning about Canada's history and culture. But what the survey also shows, is that Canadians don't think immigration for the purpose of economic expansion should come at the expense of immigration for the purpose of reuniting families or expanding social and cultural values.
Mar 28, Canadian Politics: Elections Canada 2011

So Canada is heading into its 4th elections within the last 7 years! I have to admit, I find it exciting! I like to watch the CTV news channel to get my dose of Canadian politics, and I visit their website to read what others have to say about the current affairs in Canadian politics.

Unfortunately I'm not a citizen yet, and I truly regret that I can't cast my vote for the Conservatives come May 2nd (unless I get through my citizenship test and ceremony before then, which is due anytime now), but I hope the majority of Canadians will make an informed decision on this day (which they will if they've been following Canadian Politics regularly), and realize that with Harper at the helm, Canada will continue to prosper. If he did reasonably well with his minority government - despite the constant bickering from the Opposition parties - imagine what he can do for this great country in a majority position! This Elections Canada 2011 I think he deserves a majority... and I hope Canadians will allow him this victory, especially considering the other choices in leadership that don't seem very promising.

So, here's to hoping Canadians will make the right choice on May 2nd 2011! Cheers to a Harper / Tory Majority! :)
